Constitution of the Alpha Oklahoma Chapter of the Lambda Alpha Anthropological Honor Society

Mission Statement

The University of Tulsa Chapter (Alpha of Oklahoma) of the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society’s goal is to provide an extracurricular activity for students and faculty of the University of Tulsa as well as the community, thereby enhancing the college experience. The objective of the club is to promote student and faculty involvement in a variety of cultural and multicultural activities as well as promote and enhance student-faculty relationships. In addition, as part of the Lambda Alpha Anthropological Honor Society the club further encourages and stimulates scholarship and research in anthropology by recognizing and honoring superior achievement in the discipline among students, faculty, and other persons engaged in the study of anthropology.

Article I: Name

The official name of this organization shall be Alpha of Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club of Lambda Alpha; the chapter is also known as the University of Tulsa Student Anthropology Society.

Article II: Purposes and Objectives

Section 1: The club will encourage and stimulate scholarship, research, and interest in the four fields of anthropology among faculty, staff, students, and community

Section 2: The club will provide out-of-classroom experiences in a variety of multicultural activities.

Section 3: The club will recognize and honor superior achievement in the discipline among students, faculty, and other persons engaged in the study of anthropology.

Article III: Membership

Section 1: Membership in Alpha of Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club (Student Anthropology Society) is open to all students, faculty, friends, and staff members holding an interest in anthropology or anthropology-related fields.

Section 2: Alpha of Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club is a graduate organization, but is open to the entire University of Tulsa community.

Section 3: Membership in Alpha of Oklahoma Chapter (Student Anthropology Society) does not require membership in the national Lambda Alpha Honor Society.

Section 4: Membership and participation shall be free of discrimination and harassment regardless of age, race, gender, nationality, ethnic background, disability, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Section 5: Members will represent the program, the club, and the university on campus and in the community.

Section 6: For membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society undergraduates must be currently enrolled with 12 hours completed in the Anthropology program. An anthropology GPA of 3.0 and an overall GPA of 2.5 are required.

Section 7: For membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society graduate students must be in good departmental standing, with a cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Section 8: For membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society faculty members who are in good standing in the institution, and are connected with the discipline of anthropology are automatically eligible for membership.

Article IV: Meetings

Section 1: The organization will hold regular monthly meetings.

Section 2: Club meetings and all club activities will be open to all who wish to attend.

Section 3: The time and place of meetings will be made publicly available when known.

Section 4: For membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society, new members shall be inducted once every year.

Article V: Finances/Dues

Section 1: There will be no membership dues required for membership in Alpha Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club.

Section 2: For membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society a lifetime membership fee is twenty-five dollars and is to be paid upon application.

Article VI: Officers

Section 1: The officers of this organization shall be:

(a) President

(b) Vice President

(c) Treasurer

(d) Secretary

(e) Webmaster (optional)

Section 2: Elected officers shall remain in office for a term of one year; failure to comply with this will result in temporary appointment of another officer.

Section 3: Candidates must be active members in the TU Student Anthropology Association and students of the University of Tulsa.

Section 4: If an officer resigns the following occurs: the position is filled by nomination and a majority vote of Alpha Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club members present.

Section 5: Regular elections will be held for all positions once a year in the fall.

Section 6: The duties of the officers will be as follows:

A. President: The president will preside over meetings, oversee general club procedure, call special meetings, conduct the business of officer meetings, help in the planning of club fundraisers, help coordinate planning of club events such as field trips, holiday events, movie nights, etc., ensure the Alpha Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club is actively pursuing objectives outlined in Article II, and represent the club on campus and in the community.

B. Vice President: The vice-president will assume the responsibility of the president in absence, help in the planning of club fundraisers, help coordinate planning of club events such as field trips, holiday events, movie nights, etc., attend officer meetings, assist the president in administering to the business of the organization, and represent the organization on campus and in the community.

C. Treasurer: The treasurer will assist other officers as needed, keep a financial record of the organization funds, help in the planning of club fundraisers, help coordinate planning of club events such as field trips, holiday events, movie nights, etc., attend officer meetings, and represent the organization on campus and in the community.

D. Secretary: The secretary will be responsible for the documentation of all Lambda Alpha meetings, including taking meeting minutes. They will also assume responsibility for updating the calendar of events and disseminating meeting minutes to the executive. In addition, the secretary will also assist in copying and hanging flyers or making announcements, help in the planning of club fundraisers, help coordinate planning of club events such as field trips, holiday events, movie nights, etc., attend officer meetings, assist other officers as needed, and represent the organization on campus and in the community.

E. Webmaster: The webmaster will assume the responsibility of broadcasting meetings and special events of the organization by posting notices on, but not limited to the TUOrgSpace page, Facebook and Twitter. The webmaster will also be assist in copying and hanging flyers or making announcements, help in the planning of club fundraisers, help coordinate planning of club events such as field trips, holiday events, movie nights, etc., attend officer meetings, assist other officers as needed, and represent the organization on campus and in the community.

Article VII: Rules of Procedure

Section 1: In order to maintain active organization status, the Alpha Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club must adhere to the rules and regulations outlined in the University of Tulsa’s Student Organization Handbook found at http://orgs.utulsa.edu/sa/documents/eDocs/OrgHandbook.pdf

Article VIII: Amendments

Section 1: Amendments to this constitution shall be made by a unanimous vote of the executive officers with the approval of the advisory and in accord with the guidelines issued by the local and national chapters of Lambda Alpha

Article IX: Disciplinary Procedures

Section 1: Respect for fellow members is required.

Section 2: In the event that any members display unreasonable or inappropriate conduct toward a fellow member, he/she will be asked to leave the meeting or event.

Article X: Faculty Advisor:

Section 1: There shall be at least one faculty advisor for the Alpha Oklahoma Chapter Anthropology Club; if more than two advisors, one may supervise student applications to join the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society. Faculty Advisors must be full-time members of the anthropology faculty at the University of Tulsa in accordance with the Student Activities handbook.

Section 2: The duties of the Alpha of Oklahoma Lambda Alpha Chapter/Student Anthropology Society advisor(s) will be as follows:

A. The faculty advisor will act as a consultant for projects and special committees of the organization.

B. The faculty advisor will inform officers and members of upcoming activities and events of interest.

C. The faculty advisor will attend as many organization activities and events as possible.

D. The faculty advisor will represent the organization on campus and in the community.

Section 3: Duties of the faculty advisor in charge of student applications to the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society include:

A. The faculty advisor will present the names of qualified students for membership in the Lambda Alpha National Honor Society.

B. The faculty advisor will assist the group in the execution of their roles and responsibilities.

C. The faculty advisor will provide feedback to the organization regarding its operation and functioning, and other advice upon request.

D. The faculty advisor will be a non-voting member of the chapter, but will periodically attend the meetings of the organization.

E. The faculty advisor will collect and submit national Lambda Alpha Honor Society membership fees paid by student applicants.
