After a few months from the start of World War I, the shift of this magazine went from talking about daily struggles for African Americans in a broad sense to talking about how the war was affecting these people. Many people had to leave their families behind, some did not even know what the war was about or where it was taking place. This was one of the most used words in this magazine.
