PHI KAPPA PHI AWARDS

There are a number of awards that are available to University of Tulsa students who qualify. Three major programs are featured here. These can be examined by clicking on the following topics:

I. AWARDED TO INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

A. Fellowships (60) 1. $300,000 awarded annually -- $5000 awards 2. Andre Bustani of TU received one last year 3. For first year of graduate study 4. Each chapter may submit the name of one candidate

B. Awards of Excellence (40) 1. $80,000 awarded annually -- $2000 awards 2. Basically the same as the Fellowship, but smaller amount of money

C. Love of Learning Awards (50) 1. New award in 2007 -- $25,000 awarded annually 2. Up to $500 per individual – cannot be a Fellowship recipient 3. For post-BA studies and/or career development, and/or travel related to teaching or study 4. Thus it is meant to include more than just graduate school 5. Open to all active PKP members who have completed BA studies

II. AWARDED TO INDIVIDUALS - NON-MEMBERS

A. Study Abroad Grants (50) - 90% non-PKP members 1. $50,000 awarded annually -- $1000 awards 2. Eligibility: 30-90 credit hours 3. Must have at least 2 semesters left after returning 4. Can stay a week or a whole year 5. University must have a certified Study Abroad Program 6. No requirement to get grade or credit, but must write report upon return 7. Minimum 3.5 GPA, but not GPA-based

B. Emerging Scholars Grants (60) 1. $15,000 awarded annually -- $250 awards 2. For students after their freshman year: 30-60 credit hours 3. Designed to reach out to non-members and to attract sophomores into the society 4. GPA at least 3.75, enrolled as full-time student 5. Must attend school with active PKP chapter

III. AWARDED TO CHAPTERS

A. Literacy Grants (no set number of awardees) 1. $30,000 awarded annually - up to $2500 2. "Literacy" is defined very broadly: can be math; newborns with books; people in abuse shelters; reading to kids in cancer centers; English as a second language; verbal Appalachian history, new media, etc. 3. Mainly seed money, but they do refund ongoing programs; if that is the case, you have to resubmit every year 4. The more people you touch, the more probable the acceptance 5. Report is required after a year 6. Will not fund salary or individual wages; assumes volunteer work 7. Can fund travel, or software, or durable goods such as books 7. Can piggy-back onto existing program 8. University has to have active PKP chapter
