Who are we and why are we here?

This is the initial entry for the new blog for the Department of Special Collections and University Archives, McFarlin Library, The University of Tulsa.  There may be some detail changes as things get settled with this journal.

Just to give some indication of who and what we are, this department is currently comprised of two professional staff members, one paraprofessional staff member, a contract curator, a single graduate assistant, 5 work study students, and a single volunteer.  Our rare books materials were nearly 140,000 volumes at the last count (15,600 shelf feet), our manuscript holdings exceed 4000 linear feet.  This does not include our major unprocessed photographic materials, which are measured at 18 tons (and that’s not hyperbole).

We occupy three floors in the 1967 wing of the McFarlin Library: the top three floors of the Tower, and a third of the Offsite Storage Facility.

Clearly things are a little busy around here, but it is our intention to make some time to tell people more about the department.
