Spanish documents

Report, 1752

The University of Tulsa, McFarlin Library, department of Special Collections holds some interesting items. This week we have been working on digitizing and uploading to our digital collections site some of our documents in Spanish. We do not have a comprehensive collection, but we do have some interesting pieces.

Two of the documents relate to the Pimaria Alta, corresponding to southern Arizona. One, a letter from Father Jacob Sedelmeyer of the Mission of Tubutama to Provincial Father Andres Xavier Garcia.  The other is a signed letter that refers to the death of Father Jose de Torres Perea, and the urgent need for more mission priests in Arizona country, especially in the districts of Caborca, Tubutama, and Dolores in the Valley of the Pimas, as well as for the two new missions just founded by Father Christoval de Escobar. The author also describes explorations he had hoped to make into Arizona.
