D.H. Lawrence’s Bay: A Book of Poems

Today I had the pleasure of reclassifying Bay: A Book of Poems by D.H. Lawrence. The Department of Special Collections and University Archives at McFarlin Library is privileged to own two copies of this wonderful little book. The first is number 25 of 30, hand-printed on Japanese vellum with a vellum spine. The second is number 48 of 50, printed on cartridge paper with a green cloth spine. The book was printed by the Beaumont Press in Westminster, England. It was the Press’s eighth book and its fourth printed by hand. Cyril W. Beaumont arranged the typography and binding, while Anne Estelle Rice designed the cover and decorations. Both copies have decorative paper boards, and copy 1 is signed by the author and the artist.

Bay is an example of Lawrence’s earlier poems, which were included in volume 1 of The Collected Poems.

If you can’t make it to Special Collections to view these items, you can see a copy online courtesy of the Internet Archive and the University of California Libraries.
