As part of the ongoing exhibit of posters in Special Collections for Veterans Day, the students who created the exhibits also created entries for this blog. We will be posting these over the rest of the month of November.
1992.004.5.129 At the Front! Every fit Briton should join our brave men at the Front. Enlist Now.
At The Front! Every fit Briton should join our brave men at the Front; Enlist Now is a humorous poster. The imagery in the poster is reminiscent of American Civil War Images. The strong men riding horses are in power, the man in the foreground is not only riding a horse and in a position where he could slide sideways at any time but he is also holding onto a horse steering both horses away from the exploding ground. This poster was made to attract the upper class British men. The men, who are riding the horses, although in action poses, are well kept and look very healthy.
The poster itself contains the explosive image, framed and on a green background. This poster layout is setup is similar to The Veteran’s Farewell. They look like a museum display or the way an expensive painting would be displayed in a home. The writing is attached as though attaching the necessary message to it.
The poster was made between 1914 and 1915? and was created by the British Parliamentary Recruiting Committee as a way to draw in more numbers for the army.
There is a copy of the poster at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. There is a copy at Princeton University’s Poster collection. There is a copy at the University of Minnesota.
