PONCE ASV KOCH CD DCA 1053 CHAMBER MUSIC PIANO TRIO "ROMÁNTICO" 4 Pieces for Guitar Duo: Scherzino Maya / Arulladora Mexicana / Scherzino / Intermezzo 3 Preludes for Cello & Piano Sonata for Guitar & Piano
Trio Tulsa Carlo Pezzimenti, Leslie Enlow - guitars Marta Urrea - piano
More Mexican magic from ASV: a fourth release of music by Mexico's best-known composer, Manuel Ponce (1882-1948). Here is the first-ever CD devoted to his chamber music, including the world premiere of his first major work, the delightful, Puccini-influenced Trio Romántico of 1911, performed by Trio Tulsa. Also European in feeling are three beautiful Preludes for cello, composed when Ponce was studying with Dukas. Inspired by Segovia, Ponce left a magnificent legacy of music for guitar (including Concierto del Sur, on CD DCA 952). Particularly striking is a large-scale Sonata for guitar with piano (originally harpsichord), powerfully and sensitively performed here by Italian guitarist Carlo Pezzamenti. The programme is completed by four irresistibly Mexican flavoured pieces for guitar duo, transcribed from piano originals. All the splendid artists are making their ASV recording debuts.
