Trio History Trio Tulsa

"Trio Tulsa Debut Magnificent" headlined the Tulsa Tribune in its review of Trio Tulsa's inaugural concert on January 30, 1987. Trio Tulsa, now composed of University of Tulsa faculty members Maureen O'Boyle, violinist, Diane Bucchianeri, cellist, and Roger Price, pianist, has received regional, national, and international acclaim during its sixteen year history.

Trio Tulsa's recording of the newly discovered Piano Trio in G by Claude Debussy was first aired on National Public Radio's Performance Today program in 1988. The Trio's performance of the Clara Schumann Piano Trio Opus 17 was aired in March, 1988 as part of National Public Radio's celebration of National Women's History Month.

In May, 1990, Trio Tulsa won the prestigious David Bruce Smith National Competition and was selected to become Artistic Ambassadors for the United States Information Agency. For this achievement, the Trio was honored and performed in concert at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.

As Artistic Ambassadors, Trio Tulsa toured the Caribbean, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile, Eastern Africa, Mauritius, and the Persian Gulf. It was hailed as a "Trio of extraordinary talent" and as "one of the foremost chamber groups of the United States."

In 1994, Trio Tulsa was invited to participate in the International Music Festival in San Jose, Costa Rica. The Trio was praised for its "absolute dominion over technique and passion for music." In 1995, the ensemble performed throughout Venezuela and Mexico.

In 1997, Trio Tulsa was invited to perform with the Czech National Symphony in Prague. The Trio recorded the Concertino for Piano Trio and String Orchestra by Bohuslav Martinu.  This work along with other works by Martinu has been released on a CD under the Centaur label, fall 1999.

For the past fifteen years, Trio Tulsa has received grants for the State Arts Council of Oklahoma to participate in the Oklahoma Touring Program. These grants have enabled the Trio to give concerts and present school programs throughout the State.

On the roster of the Mid-America Arts Alliance, the Trio has performed extensively in the Midwest, presenting concerts and master classes in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, New Mexico, and Texas.

Trio Tulsa's repertoire spans the entire piano trio literature, with special emphasis is given to works by women composers, past and present. The Trio participated in the 2001 International Festival of Women Composers in Indiana, Pennsylvania. To further its goal of promoting works by contemporary women composers, Trio Tulsa commissioned a piano trio from Gwyneth Walker. This composition, A Vision of Hills. was premiered at the University of Tulsa in February, 2003.

A CD of works by Bohuslav Martinu, including the Concertino for Piano Trio and String Orchestra, recorded in Prague with the Czech National Symphony, was released on the Centaur label (CRC 2415) in 1999. The CD and the Trio's performance was praised in the Strad magazine.

Trio Tulsa performs the Trio Romantico on a CD of Works by Mexican composer, Manual Ponce for the ASV-Koch lable.

A CD of the Chamber Works of Gwyneth Walker is in preparation.
