"Trio Tulsa Debut Magnificent" headlined the Tulsa
Tribune in its review of Trio Tulsa's inaugural concert on
January 30, 1987. Three years later, in 1990, founding
members Derry Deane, Kari Caldwell, and Anna Norberg,
faculty members of the University of Tulsa, won the
prestigious David Bruce Smith National Competition and were
selected to become Artistic Ambassadors for the United
States Information Agency. As Artistic Ambassadors, Trio
Tulsa and the Deane-Norberg Duo toured the Caribbean,
Mexico, Guatemala, and Chile, Eastern Africa, Mauritius, and
the Persian Gulf. It was hailed as a "Trio of extraordinary
talent" and as "one of the foremost chamber groups of the
United States."
Trio Tulsa, the ensemble in residence at the University of Tulsa, is
currently composed of faculty members Maureen O'Boyle, violinist, Diane
Bucchianeri, cellist, and Roger Price, pianist. On the roster of the Mid-America
Arts Alliance and the Oklahoma Arts Council Touring Program, the Trio has
performed extensively in the Midwest, delighting audiences of all ages with
fresh accessible programming and insightful commentary. As a trio of regional,
national, and international acclaim, the group is frequently invited to perform
on Chamber Music Tulsa’s series which is dedicated to presenting the “very best
ensembles from around the world.”
In 1997, Trio Tulsa was invited to perform and record the Concertino for
Piano Trio and String Orchestra by Bohuslav Martinu with the Czech National
Symphony in Prague. A CD of works by Bohuslav Martinu, including the Concertino
for Piano Trio and String Orchestra, recorded in Prague was released on the
Centaur label (CRC 2415) in 1999. The November 2000 issue of The Strad
praises Trio Tulsa’s performance on this CD saying “The playing is incisive,
full of subtle undercurrents, rhythmically incisive and, in the scherzoid
writing with which Martinu peppers these works, bursting with life.”
Special emphasis has been given by Trio Tulsa to works by
women composers, past and present, earning the Trio an invitation to participate
in the 2001 International Festival of Women Composers in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
To further its goal of promoting works by contemporary women composers, Trio
Tulsa joined the Bartholdy Ensemble in commissioning a piano trio from Vermont
composer Gwyneth Walker. This composition, A Vision of Hills was
premiered at the University of Tulsa in February, 2003. In June of 2005 Trio
Tulsa was chosen to perform the Amy Beach Piano Trio on the Fifteenth Annual
Concert of Chamber Music by Women Composers at the National Museum of Women in
the Arts, Washington, DC.
In addition to the CD of works by Martinu, Trio Tulsa performs the Trio
Romantico on the CD Manuel Ponce Chamber Music (ASV KOCH CD DCA
1053) and works by Walker on the CD A Vision of Hills, Chamber Music of
Gwyneth Walker (Centaur Records CRC 2820).
