Title
Remember! The Flag of Liberty. Support It!
Subject
War Bonds
Description
An American government bonds poster depicting the purchase of government bonds as an aspect of patriotic duty. It presents a group of people, an interesting visual mix of immigrant and American images, in front of an American flag, with text that reads, "Remember! The Flag of Liberty. Support It! Buy U.S. Government Bonds." The poster appeals to a sense of patriotism by associating the purchase of bonds with loyalty to America and, implicitly, the neglect of purchasing bonds with betrayal of the American principle of liberty. The Americans presented in the image appear as strong and attractive men and women in the peak of their health. The image of the man in the foreground, is typical of traditional representations of masculinity: dark with broad shoulders, large hands, and strong facial features. The woman and child behind him emphasize his stance as a masculine leader and guardian figure. The poster's imperative, "Remember! The Flag of Liberty. Support It!" implies that the only way to remain loyal to the United States is to purchase government bonds, joining the ranks of the loyal, patriotic Americans on the poster. To neglect the demands of the poster would be to defy masculine duty, liberty and common patriots all over America.
