Description

The poster, Blood or Bread, is depicted by two American soldiers in the trench; where one soldier is cradling his wounded comrade. The coloring is different than most posters from the Great War era, as this poster has many different shades of brown which show dimension, but still it is monochromatic.
The standing soldier looks out on the cloud of gunfire, with a panicked face; the majority of his face is shadowed to contour the fatigue the war has taken its toll on him. This shirtless soldier has a strong and rigid body, though he is hunched over holding the fallen companion.
The fallen soldier’s color is shaded by pallor in pigment which shows a tonality a couple of shades lighter. It is the reflection of the impending death of the wounded soldier with his face is bandaged from wounds of battle as well as a cut on his unprotected chest near his heart.
The syntax of the poster is written as if in fragmented Morse Code, short succinct and to the point. “Others are giving their blood You will shorten the war- save life if you eat only what you need, and waste nothing.”
