Description
A team photograph of the St. Ignatius Hospital football team in 1915 or 1916. The hospital was converted from a Jesuit college in April 1915 and was filled with sisters such as Alice Welford, whose scrapbook the photo appears in. The hospital was located on the island of Malta.
Alice Welford kept a meticulous scrapbook of daily life as a nurse, including this documentation of WWI-era hospitals playing each other in an intramural football league.
In the photo, fourteen young men all face the camera, mostly with crossed arms, some smiling. Ten of the men wear matching uniforms, with a could look to be wearing military attire. The left-most man in uniform has a bandage on his left eye. The football rests on the gran between the legs of the front center player.
