Title
"War Cartoons" by John F. Knott
Subject
World War One: Satire
Description
This is a small sampling of cartoons that were created by John Francis Knott for the Dallas Morning News during WWI. The images he created between 1914 and 1918 drew national and international attention and were reprinted in Literary Digest and Review of Reviews. In 1918, he published a book of his works titled "War Cartoons" and the images here are sampled from that work. These images are widely cited as having aided sales of the Liberty Loan Bonds and were a fixture on the front page of the Dallas Morning News. During his long career, Knott drew more than 15,000 cartoons and was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists in 1951 as the best cartoonist. He retired from the Dallas Morning News in 1957 and taught painting in the Dallas public schools before his death in 1963. His style -- while somewhat satirical -- was nonetheless an intense protest against the injustices of the war. Together, these cartoons provide powerful evidence that the pen is actually mightier than the sword while also serving as a reminder that during war time, it was the editorial cartoonist who could say the things other journalists only dreamed of.
