Life of a German Prisoner of War

Subject

Memoir of Fay M. Ham

Description

These photocopied pages of the memoir of Fay Ham, a wagoner in the 167th Ambulance Company of the United States Army, describe his experiences as a prisoner of war in a German camp. The short memoir is handwritten and often difficult to read, but seems to have been written with confidence and purpose, as it contains only occasional emendations and crossings-out. The memoir includes both factual, documentarian descriptions of day-to-day life in the camp, and more reflective or literary passages, such as the one which opens the work, shown in the image: "Time passes swiftly, and in its passing blots from our recollection, things we would like to remember, as well as things we would like to forget." Enclosed with the document is a brief U.S. military correspondence regarding Ham's evacuation from Germany following the audience, which gives instructions for him to report to the officer in charge of the Prisoners of War Triage. Also included are three photos: one of a U.S. medical ambulance (perhaps the one driven by Ham) and two of Ham himself.
