Description

This exhibit is a collection of standard-issue military equipment, belonging to Staff Sergeant Walter R. Jager, of the 94th Aero Squadron. The collection includes his helmet, hat, belt with canteen and gun holster, and mess kit, along with a German gas mask and an empty grenade shell.

 

Helmet: A standard M1917 doughboy helmet. The initials "W.R.J." are written on the brim, and the serial no. 062 SH is inscribed underneath it. Interior label reads, "Tighten cord and adjust net to fit the head."

 

Hat: Brown leather campaign hat, tied with cord around crown. No unique features.

 

Belt with canteen, holster: Khaki cloth belt, with "W.R. Jager/94th" written in black marker on interior. Canteen is attached to pouch on left side, holster on right. The canteen is grey steel, marked "U.S." and "Jager '94". The holster is brown leather, inscribed with "USA Perkins Campbell 1917 R.J.M." on outside. Inside, "W.R. Jager 94th" is written in black marker.

Attached back belt pouch has "W.R. Jager" written on outside, and "EF W.R. Jager/Perkins Campbell 1917" on inside flap. Pouch contains one sealed medkit, with "First Aid Packet -- U.S. Army./Contract July 22nd, 1916/Bauer and Black, Chicago, U.S.A./To Open -- Pull Ring./ Patent Applied For." 

 

Mess Kit: Standard grey M1910 meat can, inscribed with "W.R.J." on rear, "US [unreadable] 1916, 94 AERO 77" on clasp. Empty.

 

Grenade Shell: Shell from a French F1 grenade, preferred by American GIs. The letter "F" is inscribed on the exterior of the shell. No fuse.

 

Gas Mask: A Lederschutzmaske GM 1917 gas mask, typically used by German and Austrian-Hungarian forces, with containers and filters. Mask canister is inscribed with "No. 172 5 Jull 18 B.F. 11.0.11 DW." There are 6 unopened filters in the mask, each with the instructions, "Glasscheiben, vor Feuchtigkeit schützen nicht wischen, nur am Rande an fassen so einlegen" written in green and red cursive on the outside of the filter packet. Loosely translate, the text reads: "Clean glass gently, with damp cloth only." Container is heavily rusted.
