            Subject
WWI Correspondence
            Description
Mattie Dial Hughes was an American who sponsored the education of a young French girl, Gilberte Laplace, following World War I. The Roy G. Saunders collection of Mattie Dial Hughes WWI Letters is a collection of letters, sent from Gilberte Laplace and her mother, Mme Laplace, written to Mattie Hughes and her husband from 1918-1922. The collection contains 17 letters in French (10 of which have English translations) plus 2 English translations with no accompanying French letters. Gilberte and her mother were refugees from the Ardennes during WWI. Due to the war, Gilberte could only start her education once the family fled German-occupied France. The letters from Gilberte show her education progressing as her sentences become longer and more fluid, and her writing is neater and contains fewer mistakes.
