Description

A palm-sized, leatherbound diary. Leather on the spine of the book is heavily worn; the front and back covers showcase wear and tear as well, most of it near the spine. It has 118 pages, all numbered by hand with a fountain pen, almost every entry is dated. Pages 92-114 are empty for the most part. Page 115 lists ingredients and a partial recipe. Entries begin on June 28, 1918, and end on May 11, 1919. The final page of journal reads: “Pvt. Fred Hickerson. Co. B. 314 Amm tr. 89th Div, A. P. O. 761” which lists his rank, squad/division, and station. On opposite page, there is a black and white photo of Hickerson in front of his home in August of 1959 (pictured above).
