Title
Alice Welford WWI Photograph Album and Military Nursing Lecture Journal
Subject
Photography of various people and locations during Welford’s time as a V.A.D. in the war, as well as a medical lecture journal and preserved certificates and documents from her time nursing.
Description
Alice Welford’s collection consists of a small photojournal with 251 photographs that she took throughout her years as a V.A.D. These photos range from the uplifting scenery of a beautiful beach to the more serious imagery of the inside of a hospital. Some of these are given labels and descriptions while others are left blank. The photography really helps to bring the war period alive in a way that written accounts and documentation can’t quite accomplish. While these photos are important, there is also an intimacy to them that brings home the fact that the people featured in these photographs aren’t just historical figures, but also real, ordinary people. It’s easy to feel disconnected from the past, but these images make it a challenge.
Welford's collection also includes a medical journal that consists of notes she took during lectures while training as a V.A.D. The notes feature descriptions of what it means to be a nurse, different types of surgeries and procedures, as well as different types of conditons to treat. Alongside the journal, there is a certificate from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital that shows that she completed her training. A poem that she wrote entitled “I am a Young V.A.D. is included in the collection as well. Lastly, the collection features a physical artifact from Welford in the form of a silver Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve badge she received when she was promoted to a Nursing sister.
