Title

Unknown Soldier, US Army 5th Infantry Division WWI Diary

Subject

Diaries

Description

A small leatherbound pocket diary that features an embossed advertisement for 'The House of Crane' cigars; It includes pre-printed materials from constitutional rights to topographical maps of the world. The dated entry catalog contains the daily briefs written by the soldier. There are names and addresses written briefly near the back of the book. The writing itself is characterized by a minimalist, observational style with a tone of understatement. It places forth facts from the western front about the Allied forces movement in the months prior to the Armistice. There is an irony to the diary kept ritualistically as a field log, represented by the lack of emotion. The whole diary presents a war fatigue outlined by the constant movement and the lack of good sleep.
